Professor Jim Lagopoulos

Chief Executive Officer and Director


Jim Lagopoulos is the CEO and Founder of Thompson Brain & Mind Healthcare.

 

He is a prominent Australian neurophysiologist and mental health advocate and is internationally recognised for his work in the field of neuroimaging.

 

During his 25-year academic career he has held various leadership positions, including the Director of Clinical Imaging at the Brain and Mind Research Institute at the University of Sydney, and he was the inaugural Director of the Thompson Institute at the University of the Sunshine Coast where he established the foundational clinical services and research programs.

His efforts have played a vital role in increasing awareness and access to mental health services within the Sunshine Coast region and he has been a strong advocate for reducing stigma and improving the quality of mental health care in Australia.

 

Professor Lagopoulos is passionate about translating research discoveries into real-word treatments through precision diagnostics and personalised medicine, and as a researcher he has published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles.

 

In 2021 he graduated from the Leadership in Medicine program at Harvard Medical School, and in the same year was admitted as a Fellow into the Queensland Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Max Bennett is an internationally-recognised expert in the field of neuroscience, having authored over 300 papers concerned with research on synaptic connections between nerve cells in the brain, and has written 14 books on synapses as well as on the philosophy of mind & brain.

 

He has been President of the Australian Neuroscience Society as well as of the International Society for Autonomic Neuroscience, the leading world group for the study of the nervous system associated with our emotional life.

Over the past 20 years he has driven the initiation and establishment of Institutes and foundations devoted to achieving the best out comes in mental health for the Australian community.

These include the Brain & Mind Research Institute (now Centre) at Sydney University, as well as the Mind & Neuroscience Thompson Institute (now Thompson Institute) at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

 

He has brought synergy to the areas of brain and mind research and between disciplines in psychiatry, neurology, and neuroscience, ensuring that they are embedded in outreach programs to the community.

Prior to his involvement in the charitable sector, Peter forged a successful career in Information Technology within the government sector.

With a keen eye for efficiency and a knack for navigating complex systems, he played a vital role in modernising and streamlining government operations. His experience in IT has equipped him with a unique perspective that he now applies to ensure that every dollar donated to the charity is managed with the utmost care and responsibility.
